Mar 31st
Hawgeyes BBQ will be holding their 2nd annual BBQ contest on Saturday, April 25th. It’s open to the first 10 adults and first 10 children. Last year Buster Dog did quite well, finishing 1st and 4th in the steak category for adults and 1st in the kids hamburger. This year, only David is going to compete.
Besides the contest, Hawgeyes will have demos, various grills on display, and a huge sale on BBQ seasonings. Make sure you stop out.
Hawgeyes is located in Ankeny. If you take 2nd Ave North of I-80 to the John Deer faciluty and turn right on Oral Labor Road you will run into in on your right.
Seafood Night
Mar 28th
Since Dawn had meat on Friday, I made her make up for it with this seafood feast tonight. This was a very easy meal and one that can be done on a very small budget. First thing we did was make up a batch of crab stuffing. You can Google crab cake recipe for a variety of different mixtures to suit your needs. After we mixed this up we made up 12 small crab cake balls and put in the buttflied part of the shrimp and then used the leftovers for a couple crab cakes. Meanwhile I wanted to try scallops again so we dredged those in flour. Finally the leftover shrimp went on a skewer.
The crab cakes and the stuffed shrimp went on hot cast iron skillets and the shrimp on skewers directly. After the crab cakes were done the scallops went on. It only took about 10 min total to cook the entire meal.

Abita Amber
Mar 23rd
At one time I saw Abita beer posted on the Big Green Egg forum by a guy named Mike in Abita. So a few weeks ago at Hy Vee, I notced they had it in the cold beer section. I took a look at it and thought it sounded pretty good. I bought some this last weekend to go with some andouille sausage I had picked up. The pairing couldn’t be better. The sausage was very good and had a nice burn after a minute or so. But the beer was so smooth and complimented the spice so well you would never had known it was spicy. I recommend this with Gumbo, Jambalaya, or any other spicy food mix.
Anduille Sausage
Mar 18th
Send me your Anduille Sausage recipes. I bought some at a recent trip to Restaruant Depot and have about 7.5 lbs now. Jambalya will be on the list, along with shrimp wrapped Anduille. What else you got?
Ankeny Ducks Unlimted Canceled
Mar 12th
Unfortunately the Ducks Unlimited contest held in Ankeny, IA has been canceled. This is unfortunate as we usually used this location for a Friday night BBQ get together.
Scallops
Mar 8th
Some scallops placed on a cast iron griddle. Cooked at about 350-400. Left them on about two minutes too long.
Spinach Artichoke Chicken
Mar 6th
Dawn whipped these up recently. Quickly becoming a restaurant favorite of mine. Artichoke is mayo, parmesean, artichokes and cheese. Grilled chicken on egg and topped this and in the broiler for a couple minutes.
