Marshalltown Wrap Up
Jun 27th
This past weekend Buster Dog BBQ competed in the Iowa State BBQ Championship in Marshalltown, IA. It’s a great contest with a great venue. The contest is held at Riverview park. The park is spacious enough you have plenty of room to spread out. Each site has 30 amp power and new this year we had water at our site too. Marshalltown is also the host location for the Iowa Barbeque Society’s main contest.
We dropped our trailer off on Thursday night and it was a great evening. Friday, well. Very warm and very humid. It was kind of a busy day because we didn’t get back up there till around 1. Then we finished unpacking. At 5 was the cooks meeting followed by an party at Hawgeyes BBQ/TNT landscaping. They brought in Taylor’s Maid Rights and pizza and provided beverages. By 6 we were back prepping meat and David did a kids que where he made a blue cheese crumbled ribeye steak. Friday we also got a surprise visit from Russell and Mike. Nice of them to drop by. Russell is getting ready for his first contest and we are excited for him. Friday night we also got a margaritta from Capt Ron’s Brew N Crew. It was excellent. It was also great to see so many teams from out of state we normally don’t see to often.
Keeping in form, Marshalltown is not Marshalltown without the rain. So Friday night the rain came through around 1130. It could have been much worse then what we got as they had tornado warnings about 45 min north of us. Luckily it was just rain and thunder. We awakened to lots of mud and puddles on Saturday. Nothing to slow us down but it kept a lot of people closer to their setups.
When awards came we got 9th place in chicken and 5th place in brisket. I was really hoping for ribs. They were very good looking as was the pork. Someday they will all four come together. A 9th place overall finish out of a strong group of teams was very rewarding.

Seafood Night
Mar 28th
Since Dawn had meat on Friday, I made her make up for it with this seafood feast tonight. This was a very easy meal and one that can be done on a very small budget. First thing we did was make up a batch of crab stuffing. You can Google crab cake recipe for a variety of different mixtures to suit your needs. After we mixed this up we made up 12 small crab cake balls and put in the buttflied part of the shrimp and then used the leftovers for a couple crab cakes. Meanwhile I wanted to try scallops again so we dredged those in flour. Finally the leftover shrimp went on a skewer.
The crab cakes and the stuffed shrimp went on hot cast iron skillets and the shrimp on skewers directly. After the crab cakes were done the scallops went on. It only took about 10 min total to cook the entire meal.
