Parrothead Wins

Congrats to Parrothead Smokers who won in Pender, NE this past weekend. That makes five grand championships for him. Why is that important? Well, if he gets to seven we get an invite to the Jack Daniels World Championship since he will have the seven needed to automatically qualify and he won the other South Dakota contest.

Minnesota in May Wrap Up

Well our streak of top 10 finishes was snapped. We finished 24th in Minnesota in May. I thought the food was good and consistent. The ribs were very fatty and finished 37th. Not sure I would argue. We are a little disappointed that chicken missed the top 10 for the second straight week. Not sure why.
The contest was so much better than last year. The weather was beautiful with no wind and plenty of sun. A nice mid ’60’s both days. The organzation was awesome as well. We were led to our spots, provided a nice hot breakfast and awards were moved up 1/2 hour. I have some photos of the event but David took 250 photos of mostly junk so Ihave to filter through the photos.
Gravy-Filled-Fatty Fried-Biscuit-Ball

If you ever have had a fatty before you know how good it is. A roll of sausage like Jimmy Dean sprinkled with rub and smoked for a few hours. Well, breakfast sausage without biscuits and gravy seems like a waste. I want to thank this member of the BBQ Brethren for the creativity of coming up with a fried biscuit ball that will be a sure fire winner. I so can’t wait to make these.

Stuffed Dinner

The BBQ Brethren had a pork chop throwdown so I tried some stuffed chops. They were seasoned with Todd’s Dirt and grilled on the Big Green Egg at 500 degrees for about 15 minutes until they were 150. Plated with twice baked potatoes and stuffed mushrooms.

Ok, here’s the 2010 schedule.
Some thing of note. We have added a few new contest this year to make up for those lost here in Iowa. We have also dropped a couple contest where they just plain didn’t like our food. In 2010 we will be making return trips to some contest we really enjoyed in 2009 and also returning to Mason City. With our win in Vermillion, SD last year we will have an entry to the American Royal invite which will mark our first trip to compete in the Royal. Hopefully that win is good enough to get drawn for the Jack Daniels World Championship in October. Right now we have a 50% shot unless another contest comes up in South Dakota. We are going to Huron to try to win out. Wish us luck.

Would we have liked better? Heck yes. But considering we were using a new pit and a couple new recipes I am pleased. What you don’t see inside the numbers is how we finished the year with four top 10 places in the last five contest including a championship and two first place chicken calls back to back weeks.
